If you’re contemplating sliding down the nearest piste this season for the first time impersonating Bambi on ice, keep warm and wear the right protective clothing.
Ski helmets are fast becoming popular as modern technology improves making them lighter and warmer. Consider a helmet with adjustable ventilation holes to help keep your head cool in the spring time. Get a ski helmet with a clip at the back to keep your goggle strap secure in case they’re accidently knocked off your face.
Snow goggles are essential when skiing to protect against harmful UV rays and severe cold. Amber lenses are a popular choice as they work well in most lighting conditions. Go for dual lenses to stop fogging and consider out-rigging or hinges at the side if you intend to wear a ski helmet.
Heat exchanger masks are perfect for keeping your body core temperature warm in extreme cold weather. The innovative masks stop you inhaling icy cold air by warming it with your own exhaled breaths. This process also helps keep your feet and hands warm.
To keep warm and active on the piste, wear at least 3 layers. Polypropylene clothing worn next to the skin is breathable and helps wick perspiration away from the body. Layers between the inner and outer layer should be made from fleece or wool and the outer layer jackets and trousers made from waterproof breathable material. The North Face and Berghaus are trusted brands which are leaders in outdoor clothing.
Wear a good pair of socks which will wick away moisture and avoid wearing thick or several socks as this can restrict movement and cause circulation problems resulting in cold feet.
Finally, sunshine on the piste can be extremely strong at higher altitudes, use a strong sunscreen (at least factor 30) to protect your face, ears and neck. Chapped lips are common in cold windy weather, use a lip balm with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating.
